Narrative Celebration Class Presentation

October 13th, 2011 by · No Comments · 5th, Google Docs, rla

Ms. Zarikow’s class worked in three groups to collaborative create a presentation for their narrative celebration. Each child created a slide on which they included a snippet of their narrative and then reflected on how they had improved the piece via their revisions.

When they were done, Ms. Zarikow merged the three presentations together into one presentation.  She needed to do that because only 10 people can edit one presentation at a time.

Google Docs Collaborative Writing

October 7th, 2011 by · No Comments · 5th, Google Docs, rla

I cannot tell you how excited my 5th graders were to write today. Each of our students in grade 5, for the first time, now has their own Google Apps account and today we dove straight in to collaborating on a personal narrative piece they had previously written in Microsoft Word. The process was as follows: Upload, share, advise, revise.

Upload

After logging in, the students first uploaded their document into Google Docs, named it, and read over it to make sure that everything looked good.

Share

The students then added their collaboration partner by giving them the ability to view and comment on their document.

At this point, they also added their teacher.

Advise

Each student then went back to their Google Docs account and found a new document from their friend waiting for them. After opening it, they were then able to read through and make comments.

Revise

The best part of the day was seeing how enthusiastic the kids were to go back in to fix and improve their writing. After the students made changes to their original piece, they asked if they could add more editors to their document who could review and make comments on their piece. Here’s a short, raw video of part of the process. My favorite part is at 1:25 when a student enthusiastically yells out to the class, “Everybody, everybody, get on mine!”

That’s exciting writing!

Mr. Scott’s Environments Voicethreads

May 3rd, 2011 by · Comments Off · 4th, science, voicethreads

Mr. Scott’s class took photos of their environments terrariums. Every few days they took new photos to help document the changes going on inside. They also kept a written log of the changes they observed.

At the end of the experiment, they each combined their observations and photographs into Voicethreads.  For a limited time you may view all of the Voicethreads by clicking on the links below.  Next year, only these exemplars will remain.

Mrs. Mutsch’s Class Read to Feed Voicethreads

April 26th, 2011 by · No Comments · 3rd, social studies, voicethreads

Mrs. Mutsch’s students researched the differences between developed and developing countries. They decided to take part in Read to Feed, a Heiffer International project. Students convinced donors to sponsor them in a read-a-thon. The money they raised helps people in developing countries become more self-sufficient.

Ms. Zarikow’s class created books of the poems they wrote this year. They created the books in Mircosoft Word. Then they saved the books as .PDF. We uploaded those PDF files to www.youblisher.com to create flippable, embeddable books.   Here are two examples.
